We were so surprised and shocked by Georgene's sudden passing. She was my good friend all through our school years, especially in grammar school. Then in our later days we enjoyed bowling together for 15 plus years. She will always have a special place in my heart. Our deepest and heartfelt sympathy to all of the Doorn Family. When we were growing up, there was a house on our block that all the children knew well. It the place we could gather, the place we knew we were welcome. It was a place where our parents knew any trouble we would dream up, wasn't going to be of the serious kind. It wasn't the simple swing set in the yard nor was it the pool that came later that made this house the place we to which were drawn. This was the place where we skipped rope in the driveway, tumbled in the front lawn and sat shivering while drying off in the warm air emanating from the air conditioning unit behind the house. We roller skated in the basement and built forts out of blankets in the bedrooms. We ate Spaghettios at the kitchen table and even enjoyed the special treat of a bottle of Pepsi from the garage refrigerator in the afternoon. Mrs. Doorn made that house on Palm Court a home for her family and a welcome place for the children of the block. She would serve us lunch, tolerate our often loud interaction and even take the time to play a game of Othello with us. She would clean-up after our forts and games and misguided attempts at baking. She would bring us out a treat in the afternoon while we baked in the summer sun. We didn't even have to ask. She was a constant in our lives and we never really appreciated what she did for us nor did we really give a thought as to what she meant to us. She was quietly loving us, which was her way. She would hop in her station wagon and go to "the K-Mart" with Deb and I bouncing around in the "way back". We ran around her in the store playing tag or just being loud and goofy. We took secret joy in irritating her, at which point we were no longer Debbie and Patty, but Debra and Patricia. She would shake her head and put her hands on her hips and say, "You girls have more marolges!" By the way, we were also full of kasoos. I am certain I spelled those words incorrectly, but any kid that grew up on Palm Court will know what I mean. She was good-natured and was blessed with a great sense of humor. One day Mr. Doorn, Debbie and I were sitting in the family room. Mrs. Doorn was shocked to find us sitting there as she came out of the laundry room wearing only her undergarments. With dry humor Mr. Doorn said, "So Patty, how do you like Mrs. Doorn's new outfit?" Mrs. Doorn simply shook her head and dashed up the stairs while Debbie and I dissolved in laughter. When Mrs. Doorn mistook the gas for the break and drove through the back of the garage, Mr. Doorn put a stop sign on the wall after it was repaired. After that, Debbie and I took to repeatedly shouting "Stop!" every time Mrs. Doorn would pull into the garage. She was a patient woman. The Doorn house wasn't just the home of my best friend and partner in mischief, but of a mother who showed unconditional love and compassion. When I was nine years old my father was diagnosed with cancer. Mrs. Doorn was the only person to whom I felt I could voice my darkest secret, that I wished my father's suffering would end. Mrs. Doorn told me that I was older than my years (I had no idea what that meant). She comforted me and told me that I shouldn't feel guilty about feeling that way. This woman who lived a simple life, who had no advanced degrees or formal training, spoke from her heart and said exactly the right thing. She took a fragile ten year old girl in her arms and said, "It's because you love him so much that you are willing to let him go." I have kept that brilliant, insightful and loving message in my heart all these years. Mrs. Doorn, I hope you know that in your final days, I spoke that same truth to your daughter and I believe she found solace in your words, though you weren't able to speak them yourself. Your kindness, compassion and loving ways touched many hearts and you will be remembered always.
